That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live. I can design a collection in a day and I always do, cause I've always got a load of Italians on my back, moaning that it's late. Every day I'm thinking about change. I'm a fashion designer and people think, what do I know? Money doesn't buy elegance. You can take an inexpensive sheath, add a pretty scarf, gray shoes, and a wonderful bag, and it will always be elegant.

Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind. Dressing up. People just don't do it anymore. We have to change that. It's a philosophy of life. A practice. If you do this, something will change, what will change is that you will change, your life will change, and if you can change you, you can perhaps change the world. First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn't like anyone else's. I wanted to dress the woman who lives and works, not the woman in a painting.

It's useless to send models out on the runway to cry. I am always locked in my design studio. That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live. I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business. Fashion is made to become unfashionable.

I think God is the most fantastic designer. You're only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure. Fashion is to please your eye. Shapes and proportions are for your intellect. I love to design things that people can actually buy. I'm staggered by what a boot costs today. A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes.
