Shop my style

That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live. I can design a collection in a day and I always do, cause I've always got a load of Italians on my back, moaning that it's late. Every day I'm thinking about change. I'm a fashion designer and people think, what do I know? Money doesn't buy elegance. You can take an inexpensive sheath, add a pretty scarf, gray shoes, and a wonderful bag, and it will always be elegant.

Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind. Dressing up. People just don't do it anymore. We have to change that. It's a philosophy of life. A practice. If you do this, something will change, what will change is that you will change, your life will change, and if you can change you, you can perhaps change the world. First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn't like anyone else's. I wanted to dress the woman who lives and works, not the woman in a painting.

It's useless to send models out on the runway to cry. I am always locked in my design studio. That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live. I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business. Fashion is made to become unfashionable.

I think God is the most fantastic designer. You're only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure. Fashion is to please your eye. Shapes and proportions are for your intellect. I love to design things that people can actually buy. I'm staggered by what a boot costs today. A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes.
Age is something only in your head or a stereotype. Age means nothing when you are passionate about something. Success isn't about the end result, it's about what you learn along the way. I don't try to be in fashion; I don't try to follow trends. You just end up out of fashion that way. Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury. I would like to be a one-man multinational fashion phenomenon.

Confidence. If you have it, you can make anything look good. Fashion fosters cliches of beauty, but I want to tear them apart. Jeans represent democracy in fashion. Never in my wildest dreams did I entertain the idea that I would become a fashion designer. In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish.

If you wear clothes that don't suit you, you're a fashion victim. You have to wear clothes that make you look better. For me, art is about learning and about living with people. It's alive. I think in the darkest moments, we need a break. Clothes can transform your mood and confidence. Delete the negative; accentuate the positive!

I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business. I love women's fashion, but women don't need me as much as men do. It's the men who have nothing to wear. Design and style should work toward making you look good and feel good without a lot of effort so you can get on with the things that matter. I never like to think that I design for a particular person. I design for the woman I wanted to be, the woman I used to be, and - to some degree - the woman I'm still a little piece of. It's useless to send models out on the runway to cry.
Luxury will be always around, no matter what happens in the world. The great thing about fashion is that it always looks forward. I want to thank all the women who have worn my clothes, the famous and the unknown, who have been so faithful to me and given me so much joy. Fashion should be fun. It shouldn't be labelled intellectual. A woman has the age she deserves.

I think in the darkest moments, we need a break. A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous. I didn't like the '80s at all; it was a vulgar moment of fashion. Success isn't about the end result, it's about what you learn along the way. Men don't want another man to look at their woman because they don't know how to handle it.

Attitude is everything. Fashion is a very stressful place to work because of the demands of doing the shows - no one expects a writer to produce two books a year on the dot - but it's also a very toxic place to work. Fashion should be fun. It shouldn't be labelled intellectual. Sometimes incompetence is useful. It helps you keep an open mind. I am what I am. Before I was not so proud to make fashion. My family thought fashion wasn't very interesting. So I hid that.

The key to my collections is sensuality. My shows are about the complete woman who swallows it all. It's a question of survival. I think the idea of mixing luxury and mass-market fashion is very modern, very now - no one wears head-to-toe designer anymore. My dresses are very reasonably priced, for dresses that are cut on the body. Elegance isn't solely defined by what you wear. It's how you carry yourself, how you speak, what you read.
Fashion can be this mysterious thing that you can't explain. I love my beauty. It's not my fault. Even Michelangelo got paid for doing the Sistine Chapel. To those artists who say they're doing it for the love of art, I say: Get real. I can design a collection in a day and I always do, cause I've always got a load of Italians on my back, moaning that it's late. I am what I am. Before I was not so proud to make fashion. My family thought fashion wasn't very interesting. So I hid that.

Age and size are only numbers. It's the attitude you bring to clothes that make the difference. I try to contrast; life today is full of contrast... We have to change. I think I'd go mad if I didn't have a place to escape to. Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it. Never in my wildest dreams did I entertain the idea that I would become a fashion designer.

Nostalgia is a very complicated subject for me. I'm attracted by nostalgia but I refuse it intellectually. Fashion is made to become unfashionable. I have my permanent muses and my muses of the moment. I can't get sucked into that celebrity thing, because I think it's just crass. We look our best in subdued colors, sophisticated cuts, and a general air of sleek understatement.

You have to stay true to your heritage; that's what your brand is about. Fashions fade, style is eternal. My relationships with producers or photographers - these are relationships that took years. I don't like trends. They tend to make everybody look the same. What I hate is nasty, ugly people.
